As a mega biodiversity country, Indonesia plays a very important role on the earth. Every moment 240 Indonesian citizens directly contribute either positively or negatively to their environment, and more than half of them are children. Children are the next generation who are going to determine either the bad or good quality of Indonesian environment.
At present, the quality of Indonesian environment is in critical condition. There are forest destruction, pollution, global warming and loss of ocean resources.
Environment problem is one of which effect has just been recognized, but sooner or later it will lead to other problems which are rooted from the wrong economic development. The environment has only become a showcase in the development of this nation. Millions hectares of forest are cut down every year for the sake of few people. On the other hand, thousands even millions of people must die because many factories. Million hectares of land have been robbed. This affects the people either directly or indirectly despite the government rules which are already authorized.
Basically, the environmental problems all around the world come from the same problem roots : low awareness, the knowledge and our point of view on the environmental problems themselves. If we have a chance to see the nature of Indonesia from the air by a plane or when we are surfing the internet through Google Earth, we will certainly realize the worrying our environmental condition. Our way of thinking on the environmental problem and consider it as low priority must be extremely changed immediately since the handling of the complicated problem is the responsibility of the whole nation and it needs our active role in a real commitment.
Environment pollution is our problem which needs to solve since it involves our health, life and safety. Everyone may take part in solving the problem. We can start from the smallest, ourselves up to a wider space.
The problems that must be saved immediately are water and river pollution, air pollution in the cities, soil contamination, acid rain, global climate change, the thinning of the ozone layer, radioactive contamination, etc.
The solution consists of the prevention and management. Basically, the prevention is reducing the pollutant in order to prevent further destruction on the environment. For example by reducing the amount of garbage / waste by reuses and recycles.
In industry, it may be done by reducing the use of water, the waste and PBT (Persistent, Bio accumulative, and Toxic) chemicals and gradually replace it with Green Chemistry. Green Chemistry is all products and chemical process which reduce or omit dangerous substance.
Prevention can also be done by replacing household appliances, or the motor vehicle full with a more environment friendly material. Conservation, the use of alternative energy, alternative means of transportation and sustainable development can also be done.
Management is very important to keep the environment clean and healthy. Management can be in the form of making standardized environment quality, environment monitoring and the use of technology to over come the environmental problem. World cooperation is needed to overcome global problems like climate change, the thinning of ozone layer, and global warming.
Climate change is a major issue nowadays and it needs attention from any country, company and people to suppress the gas of greenhouse effect and global warming. Many measures can be down by promoting changing in economics and way of living such as energy efficiently, alternative energy, forest conservation and environment friendly consumption.
Life environment Day on every June, 5 is a crucial moment to grow the public empathy on their live environment and develop the effort of environment conservation. Life environment Day must be effectively utilized to remind the society, nation and the people in the world about the fate of the earth which is now very critical. It was reported sometime ago that the age of earth is only one more century left.
What is meant by the “age” is the limit that the earth can still be inhabited. In astronomy, there is another theory which connects this to the theory of star evolution, which says that the age of the earth is still 4.5 billion years more. However, the global warming and the continuously reducing environment quality cause some scientists to call the next century as one final century.
The Live Environment Day which is commemorated on 5 June is an important moment to grow the empathy of the people on their life environment and increase the political willingness to attend and do real act to conserve the environment.
Finally, a movement is needed to create a good and clean environment. A hard work is needed to maintain the people’s right of the environment. This process must be continuously supported and spread so as to form it as a part of the style, way living and wisdom. Let’s take a part and care for our earth. Stop destruction!
